Position Overview

The Heart Research Institute (HRI) is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader to serve as Scientific Director and Chief Executive Officer, with a conjoint academic appointment at The University of Sydney. The role provides executive leadership across HRI’s research, strategy, and operations, and reports to the HRI Board and the University of Sydney.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and lead HRI’s scientific strategy and organisational direction.
• Build and lead a high‑performing, collaborative leadership team.
• Ensure excellence in research quality, integrity and governance.
• Foster a culture of engagement, accountability and development.
• Secure major competitive funding and grow philanthropic support.
• Strengthen academic and clinical partnerships, including with the University of Sydney.
• Represent HRI as an ambassador to stakeholders, funders and the research community.

Selection Criteria

• Internationally recognised research track record in cardiovascular science or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated leadership of a significant research program, institute or academic department and experience in change management.
• Financial acumen and a strong record of securing major competitive research funding, including experience with commercialisation and intellectual property.
• Appreciation of fundraising activities in a scientific/health environment.
• Proven strategic capability to lead across complex, multi‑stakeholder environments.
• Established people‑leadership skills, including building engaged and high‑performing teams.
• Experience mentoring early‑career researchers and postgraduate students.
• Strong commitment to scientific integrity, quality and reproducibility.
