Research and Teaching Focus

The successful candidate's research and teaching should concentrate on one or more of the following areas of Buddhist Studies:

  • History of philosophy, religion, and literature
  • Primary sources in Sanskrit must play a central role in both research and teaching

Additional language requirements:

  • Proficiency in at least one of the following languages of Buddhism: Pali, Buddhist Chinese, or Classical Tibetan

Cooperation and interdisciplinary work:

  • Willingness to collaborate with Tibetan Studies and ancient and modern South Asian Studies, as well as other relevant disciplines at the University of Vienna
  • Engagement with the Cluster of Excellence EurAsian Transformations

The Department of South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies is one of the largest university centers for the philological-cultural study of South Asia, Tibet, and Buddhism in the German-speaking world. It hosts:

Your Academic Profile

Mandatory qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree/PhD
  • Two years of international research experience (during or after doctoral studies)
  • Outstanding research achievements, excellent publication and funding record, and international reputation
  • Gender and diversity competence
  • Experience in designing and participating in research projects, ability to lead research groups and acquire third-party funding
  • Enthusiasm for excellent teaching and supervision at bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels

Language requirement:

  • Proficiency in German (sufficient for teaching in bachelor's programs and university committee work) must be acquired within three years.

    • Initial contract as Assistant Professor (6 years, limited)
    • After positive evaluation of a qualification agreement, conversion to a permanent Associate Professor Position
