The University Eye Center (UEC), an Article 28 Diagnostic and Treatment Center within the State University of New York, College of Optometry is seeking an a detailed oriented individual to manage the day-to-day processes related to optical orders and related insurance requirements. The position will report directly to the Optical Service Manager. Major responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Serves as the primary liaison with patients, addressing any vision plan or order issues
  • Serve as subject matter expert for providing optical insurance-related information to providers, staff and patients regarding insurance coverage and benefits
  • Communicates insurance coverage and payment responsibilities to staff and patients
  • Accurate and timely data entry on vision plan portals for all optical orders
  • Processes optical orders with various ophthalmic laboratories
  • Obtains authorization approval from vision plans prior to ordering eyeglasses, as needed
  • Documents receipt of materials ordered and processing trays with orders to the lab
  • Ensures deposits are received for orders placed and communicates with patients who fail to leave a deposit
  • Serves as liaison between ophthalmic laboratories and the optical to ensure timely communication on delayed orders and informing the Optical Manager and patient of said delays
  • Troubleshoots lost, misplaced, or incorrectly filled prescription orders and assists the optical manager with patient-related concerns/issues
  • Assists with billing and financial transactions related to eyewear purchases and insurance-related issues.
  • Work with the billing department to ensure accurate and timely submission of charges for reimbursement
  • Develops and monitors operational reports to track orders, charges, payments and turn-around time of orders
  • Validates out-of-pocket expenses due from patients
  • Maintains the inventory of stock lenses
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of two years of optical experience
  • Prior experience with submitting eyeglass orders via vision plan portals
  • Computer literacy skills
Annualized salary including location pay is $51,400. Generous benefit package with fifteen days of annual leave to start and thirteen paid holidays per year.
