We have important jobs to do at SDOT. We plan and look after the citys transportation network, add more bicycle and pedestrian paths, take care of over 240 bridges, and help people get better access to the regional transit system. SDOT is excited to offer a dynamic opportunity as an Assistant Transportation Planner with our Project Development Division, supporting the Pedestrian & Neighborhood Projects team. In this impactful role, you will contribute to the development of the New Sidewalks and Safe Routes to School programs, helping design safer, more accessible pathways for Seattle children. You will participate in the selection, planning, scope development, and conceptual design, focusing on schools and key destinations. Additionally, you will lead outreach efforts with kids in our communities to ensure their needs and perspectives are incorporated. As part of this role, you will assist in administering the Walking and Biking Packages and Mini-Grant programs. Working closely with the New Sidewalk Project Development Lead, you will support the effort to install 250 new blocks of sidewalks across Seattle. Job Responsibilities- Participate in the selection, planning, scope development, conceptual design, and outreach for sidewalk and walkway projects that serve schools and other daily destinations for Seattles children.
- Employ a working knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of transportation planning with an emphasis on walking, biking, and rolling.
- Collect and analyze traffic data in the field and in the office, including traffic volumes and speeds, pedestrian counts, student travel patterns, and collision history.
- Prepare and maintain detailed documentation for all projects.
- Design and lead interactive outreach activities and workshops with diverse communities, and kids (ages 0-17) in particular, to understand their preferences and concerns about walking routes to schools and other destinations and to identify solutions in partnership with communities.
- Manage our Walking and Biking Package Program which provides free supplies to schools and families to support walking and biking as well as our Mini Grant Program which funds schools and organizations to implement their own Safe Routes to School ideas.
- Supports departmental goals in promoting diversity and social justice in keeping with the Citys Race and Social Justice Initiative.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
- Requires a Bachelors degree in Engineering, Urban Planning, Transportation Planning or a related field.
OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.
Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience:

- Compelling and engaging written and verbal communication skills and experience supporting public involvement processes.
- Collaboration and relationship building.
- Attention to detail, organization, and the ability to actively manage multiple processes.
- Ability to work effectively and productively in a hybrid work environment.
- Proven track record of effectively attending, participating, and presenting at public meetings, public outreach, and community events.
Other Requirements:
Work Environment / Physical Demands:
- Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 3 days of the work is completed in a City office, and 2 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.

The Citys full salary range for this position is $43.08 - $46.40 Hourly.
