About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australias security, enhancing Australias prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australias pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the Position
The Corporate Services Officer (Property) is part of a team who provides services to support Embassy staff and the families of Australian Based (A-based) officers to have safe, secure and reliable office and home environments. Under general direction, this position arranges and performs property maintenance and repairs in the Chancery and leased properties. It also responds to property-related requests from tenants and maintains relations with both landlords and tenants.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Take primary responsibility for an allocated part of the Embassys property portfolio and secondary responsibility for other parts of the portfolio by ensuring the office and home environments are well-maintained, fit for purpose, and support staff and families.
- Liaise with landlords, contract service providers and other key stakeholders on a range of tasks that includes repairs and maintenance, and property-related procurement.
- Maintain furniture inventory registers.
- Facilitate logistical arrangements for incoming officers and their families, including sourcing accommodation, leasing, ongoing liaison with landlords and management of settling in kits.
- Coordinate regular and ad hoc maintenance schedules and repairs for the chancery and residences, including day to day coordination of external contractors and service providers.
- Arrange documentation and clearance of A-based officer personal effects and all other official consignments.
- Undertake other corporate enabling tasks and perform backup duties as directed.
Qualifications/Experience
- Written and oral proficiency in English is required, but German or another language of the Embassys countries of accreditation is desirable (Hungarian, Slovak, Slovenian, Bosnian).
- High levels of discretion and judgment; understanding of the needs of Embassy staff and Australian-based families.
- Excellent general technical knowledge and skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively with a range of stakeholders, including senior diplomats, tradespeople and other team members.
- Ability to set priorities and organise work effectively and efficiently, and complete tasks accurately and projects with limited supervision.
- Ability to contribute effectively as a member of a small team, including proven initiative, cooperation, flexibility and reliability.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications.
- Professional trade training (e.g. electrician, plumber, carpenter) highly desirable.
- Experience coordinating multiple external stakeholders highly desirable.
Selection Criteria

A. Experience working in an administration or property role, liaising with a range of stakeholders and suppliers, ensuring standards of delivery are met and reflect value for money.
B. Initiative and ability to exercise sound judgement when providing services and ensure sensitive information is handled with discretion.
C. Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure and manage priorities with limited supervision.
D. Excellent written and oral communication in English and the ability to work effectively across all organisational levels and liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
E. A strong team player who is prepared to take on routine administrative tasks with proficiency using Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word and Outlook.
